Developing Communities

1613-2013: The port and docks of Belfast: Imagined Through Textiles

Arts for All will deliver a major textiles project in partnership with ArtsEkta which will be piloted throughout 2013. This project will explore life in the port and docks of Belfast and surrounding communities, including trade routes which will involve engaging with Indian and Polish communities. It will deliver:

  • History Workshops
  • A read through of Martin Lynch's paly Dockers (tbc)
  • Local study visits to the port and socks of Belfast, Bank of Ireland in Dublin (to view two John van Beavers tapestry pieces depicting the Battle of the Boyne) and the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum
  • Research with people who lived and worked in the port, docks, and surrounding communities
  • Tapestry panel(s) depicting life in the port and docks based on the Bayeux Tapestry
  • High profile launches of the tapestry panels at: Belfast Mela; the refurbished Arts for All Gallery (the John Luke Gallery); Harbours Commissioner's Office (on permanent display). We will also explore exhibiting at the University of Ulster, and the Festival of Quilts at the NEC in Birmingham

Workshops will take place in Arts for All, ArtsEkta, the University of Ulster, and on locations at various sites including the port and dock of Belfast, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, and the Bank of Ireland in Dublin.

This project will be piloted during 2013. If successful, applications will be made for a larger project in subsequent years.
